Taiwan quake disrupts communications

Repairing the cables could take weeks because crews have to pull them up and transfer them to a ship for repair, said Lin Jen-hung, vice general manager of Chunghwa Telecom Co., Taiwan's largest phone company.
The quakes jolted Taiwan late Tuesday, setting off a tsunami alert on the second anniversary of the Dec. 26, 2004, waves and quake that killed 230,000 in nine countries from the Indonesian islands to east Africa.
No large waves materialized this time but two people were killed when their home collapsed.
Two cables were damaged, both off Taiwan's coast, Chunghwa said.
The company reported a 50 percent loss of overall telephone capacity, with connections to China, Japan and Southeast Asia most affected.
Chunghwa also said almost all of Taiwan's communications capacity with Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong was disrupted. Also hard hit was telephone service to the U.S., where 60 percent of capacity was lost, the company said.
Internet access in Beijing was cut or extremely slow, while Japanese customers were having trouble calling India and the Middle East. In South Korea, dozens of companies and institutions were affected, including the country's Foreign Ministry.
Hong Kong telephone company PCCW Ltd., which also provides Internet service, said the quake cut its data capacity in half. Many Internet users were unable to access Web sites in parts of America, Taiwan and South Korea. Calls to Taiwan weren't connecting.
Internet access was cut or extremely slow in Beijing, said an official from China Netcom, China's No. 2 phone company. The official, who would not give his name, said the cause was thought to be the earthquake, but he had no further details.
Businesses in various parts of the city also said they were experiencing Internet access problems.
CCTV, the state-run television network, said China Telecom Corp., China's biggest phone company, was contacting counterparts in the U.S. and Europe about using satellites to make up for the shortfall.
KDDI Corp., Japan's major carrier for international calls, said its fixed-line telephone service was affected by the quake. Company spokesman Haruhiko Maeda said customers were having trouble calling India and the Middle East, which are usually use the cables near Taiwan.
Maeda said the company was rerouting calls to go through the U.S. and Europe and the company did not know how long it will take to repair the cables.
Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said that international roaming service provided by Japan's major three telecommunications — NTT DoCoMO, KDDI, and Softbank, was affected. Ministry official Akira Yamanaka said that some customers were unable to make calls using their cell phones in countries including Taiwan.
South Korea's largest telecom company, KT, said that lines it uses were damaged, affecting dozens of companies and institutions, including South Korea's Foreign Ministry.
However, the quake didn't cause problems for ordinary people using Internet and telephone service, according to Ku Ja-hong, a KT spokesman.
The quake, which hit offshore from the southern town of Hengchun, was felt throughout Taiwan. It shook buildings and knocked objects off the shelves in the capital, Taipei, in the northern part of the island.
The U.S. Geological Survey estimated its magnitude at 7.1, while Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau measured it at 6.7. It was followed eight minutes later by 7.0 magnitude aftershock, the USGS said. A 5.9-magnitude aftershock struck early Wednesday, the Central Weather Bureau said.
Two members of one family were killed in Hengchun when their four-story home collapsed. The quake injured 42 people, three homes collapsed and 12 fires broke out, the National Fire Agency said.
Quakes frequently shake Taiwan, which is part of the Pacific's "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin. Most are minor and cause little or no damage. However, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan in September 1999 killed more than 2,300 people.

How to Install Internet Explorer 7.0 Bypassing Genuine Windows Validation...

- Download the patched iecustom.dll and then copy-paste it to the update folder (IE7-WindowsXP-x86-enu\update\) and click yes when asked to overwrite.
- Run ‘update.exe’ in the update folder (not iesetup.exe!!!). At the end, you have to choose ‘exit/finish without restart’ option to finish the running process of the exe file.
- Download normaliz.dll and then copy-paste it to “c:\windows\system32\” directory (in order to prevent problems with the file not being found after the installation). And then reboot/restart your pc.
- After rebooting your pc, you may face a problem with a file called normaliz.dll that can not be found by explorer.exe. If you’re having this problem, you will find your desktop blank.(If you are not facing this problem then just go to step 7) In order to fix this problem, you have to do the following things one by one:
- Press ctrl-alt-del to go to the task manager.
- Go to “File -> Run” in the task manager.
- Type: ‘cmd’ and push enter. The command prompt window will appear.
- Type:
‘copy c:\normaliz.dll c:\windows\system32\normaliz.dll’
- in the command prompt window and push enter. - Reboot your pc and yahoo!!! now you can see your desktop contents!!!.
- Press ctrl-alt-del to go to the task manager.
- Now you have to run ‘xmllitesetup.exe’ in the update folder.
- Then reboot your pc again, run Internet Explorer…and you are done!!!

5-DAY OUTDOOR DISCOVERY COURSE 20 - 24 NOV 2006 (Part of day 3)

Happy for completing the whole course 5D4N, excited in participating the activities especially the "Cross Island" expedition and the trekking expedition including those structure main for learning some values such as the flying fox, jetty jump, trust fall and many more...
"Cross Island" expedition is the unforgettable expedition, we were kayaking to another campsite lead by the sea expetition leader and we kept going on the wrong route. We couldn't meet the time that we were supppose to be there and at that time the water is in the low tide. My watch "Raffles" and severe group were left behind, our kayak were stuck on the mud, we have no choice but to get off the kayak, girls will stay on the kayak, boys will get down and push the kayak to the exit. We kept pulling and pushing the kayak but it didn't move at all, then unfortunately my right shoe was the first to stuck into the deep stinky mud with shits on it, i kept struggling, pulling, it didn't work, my friends stand on the side holding on to the tree also tried to pull me out, but didn't work, we stayed at the same spot for about 30 mins, 1 instructor came to help me cause my legs and shoes were stuck, she kept pulling me up but no use, so she said, sorry you have to let go your shoe, well i just let go, we push and pull the kayak to the exit. After 5 mins later, it started to rain, we were wet, we push and pull until we see some people with injuries and instructors sitting overthere looking after them, the instructor do a headcount, after she do the headcount double check the number, we again set off to another exit, this time there were water, it will be a bit easier for us we were told to lie down on the tip and end of the kayak, we had to use our hands and legs to paddle and kick so that the kayak will move, we kept paddlind and kicking with our hands and legs, finally ahead of us, we saw people pushing and pulling kayak over the edge.The time went by and its at 7 pm, everyone is hungry, dirty and cold as it rains, sandflies and mosquitoes are out to bite us. We also need to carry the kayak to a place and leave it there, then the OBS staffs came to take us to the next campsite using sand viper (a transport boat), we had to walk through the trees and muds, me and some of my friends volunteered to help the staffs, i was assigned to stand on the sand viper, my other 2 friends were assigned to stand below the edge, we form a human chain and pass down the muddy item on the sand viper, we pass down the ponchos, water bottles, jerrycans, after that, those who felt ill or sick were told to sit on the express boat, they will sent to the 24hr medical centre to treat, after putting the items on the sand viper, we help our other friends by pulling them onto the sand viper, asked them to sit on the rear, both leg put in and sit down. After that we set off to our campsite. We were coveres with full of mud and when we knew that we cannot bath with soap or what, we were shocked. We could only go down to the sea water to rinse with water and thats all and only a limited time of 1 ~ 2 min. The people from St Theresas cooked all of our food and they kept asking what happen to us.They were very caring and we were all very touch.

Secondary School booth setup in Seng Kang Primary School...
6 November 06...
The day we have to setup the booth in Seng Kang Primary School, this event held every year in this school. This is to attract the students to come to their favourite Secondary School and know more about the school's facilities and more. Me arrived in school at around 8.30am at the study area waiting for Shamsuree, Evan and Feng Yuan where at around 8.45am Feng Yuan and Shamsuree arrive, so Mr Ng want to talk to us so we go to the com lab 2 outside and talk when at around 9.15am, Evan came...then we head to log room while Mr Ng go ask Mr Selva to drove us to the school, we took the shot revolver (a laser simulation pistol), 3 pacestick, 2 rifles, 1 helmet,1 SBO, Mr Ng kept telling us to double up, so we quickly take our equipment and go to Mr Selva's car Mr Ng signal Mr Selva, he escort us to Mr Selva's car then he went off because he has chinese remedial with the sec 3 E...then we left..appoint arrived in the primary school, when we reach the school, we are told to report to the security guard house there and ask the security officer for a sticker, he placed for us. then we head off to our booth, it was located at the first floor, if im not wrong the calss is call "1patience" im from this primary school of course i know la...when we enter the booth is already setup accept ours "NCC" THE GIRL GUIDES WILL THERE BUT THEY DIDNT BRING ANYTHING..."oh no" why did this happen ??? well we setup our NCC booth in the middle nearest to the entrance door. we put 2 - 3 table for the shot revolver laser gun shooting... me dress in long fold wearing on the helmet putting some of the grass on my whole body, when i step out of the class, many of the students will fancinated by me, they will either say hello or wave at me, when i wave at them they will also wave back at me...1st class entered, it's the primary 2, well it's their free period so their teacher let them browse around our school's booth...then our booth were always the best many people kept crowding around our NCC booth, why because of me, Feng Yuan, Evan and Shamsuree. Me entertained them so they follow me, well it's simple...
some of the class student's will come and take photo of the four of us, but the most photo taken was me, oh no... the most is the girls....they took their camera and take a shot...haha, all the P6's class visit all the secondary school's booth but i think our school's booth is the best, because the four of us go out, i say out loud "hello !!! next time P6 must join Seng Kang Secondary School" almost all the students replied "OK !!!" that was really cool....after when the first half o f the P6 went off, it was break for us so we four go out of the class when we do drills, Feng Yuan commanded me in chinese command...when i prune down, i accidentally brake the rifle's butt, so i quickly think of an idea which was to return to school, put back the spoilt one and bring back the good one, so i asked Ms Khalidal for permission then i went off with the broken rifle, it was really very tired, because i had to carry the weapon in longfold, i was very sweat and tired, then i reached in Secondary School, i enter NCC room and took new rifle plus the poster colour to colour my face into camouflage...after that i had to walk back to the primary school again, again very tired....it took about 15 minutes to walk from SKPS to SKSS and from SKSS to SKPS. After i reach the primary school, i walked into our booth, i asked Feng Yuan and Evan to help me paint my face it was really like im a bangra because both of them paint my face like an indian people's colour, the mix brown, green and black together. Then the first class comes in, Feng Yuan, Shamsuree and Evan entertained them, i put on my helmet and put grass on my helmet and my no.4 many P6 really come to our booth, we let them touch the dummy weapon, helmet and so on, at around the afternoon, Mr Ng arrived and hand us the rank display, the code of conduct and the core value, we place it nicely on the table then Ms Khalidal give us suggestion on putting the display board against the cupboard, i stand on the table and say out loud " hello !!! welcome to our Seng Kang Secondary School's booth, if you are interested in NCC pls come over and crowd around us, those girls who are interested in girl guides pls ask the guides, those who are interested in Red Cross pls proceed to the red cross, you'll may carry on !!! Ms Khalidal pointing to me a good sign... after a few class, i saw my former P6 form teacher Miss Ong Shir Ling leading her class to our booth, she still can recognise me when im in camouflage face...she said" Howe Liang.. wa your face really very nice...". Yeah we continue to do the same things until the end of the whole event which ends at around 1pm...it was time for us to pack up and went back to school, i chiong to the toilet and wash my face,well i splash some water on my face, the poster colour start to mix together and become black, then i use the soap but the soap button spoil, then Ms Khalidal ask me "does the poster colour on your face can be clean ?? of course i say yes la...
then i rush to the other toilet and wash my face, there was enough liquid soap for me, so i press it and rub my face, eventually it started get off, part of my face is clear, then i continued until it left only on my eyes, it was very hard to clean because it looks like i kanna panda eyes like that, i kept rubbing but it didnt went off, then suay suay loh, i get out of the toilet and saw Mr Ng's car outside the class waitng for me with Feng Yuan inside, Evan and Shamsuree went back. When me and Feng Yuan arrive in school, we put back the stuff, the Evan and Shamsuree come back later than us, i ask them why they told me "because, you know the display stand the girl guides give to us and sit inside the car and go back to school, they just give us the stand go off... wa lao where can like that ???? not fair sia, abuse ah... enjoy air-con....after that we settle the on the IMT competition on choosing who to go !!! after that Mr Ng photocopy for us, and tell us to write down the instructions we need to tell them, after that he say we can go home, so i just walk to the log room and take my Army Engineer Camp administrative instruction, then i went back to the coffee bean, i dont see even one of them at the coffee bean area, i think they go home liao...so i just go to innospace lo...

We had lotsa fun there... helping old folks and carrying stuffs. Our cadets perspired a lot, but we think that they enjoyed it. Cool!!!

One of my friend's father is a ki tang one (medium), so he
needs help from our school, actually that place is
like a celebration to the godness birthday with a
karaoke stage beside the place.
It was quite fun over there, we first arrive in school to wait for
the coordinator from the event to tell us about
the event process, what should we do over
there...After the talk, we start to move out in
cca group from the fitness corner's gate (short
cut to the open field area) so we arrive there,
tell our cadet to sit on the grass...the rest also
sit on the grass, then we special, we sit on the
chair for the dining table...then after a short
while, Miss Neo came by...staring at us...She said
:"Wah!!! sit there ah!!! the rest sit on the
grass, you'll sit on the chair...ah Seow Howe
Liang !!! when you go to the OBS, i make sure you
get it.." then we quickly get off the chair and
stand on the wooden plank...a few hours later at
around 4 to 5 pm like that, the first bus of old
folks arrive, we go there and escort them to the
dining tables...one problem is that one of them
pulled my lanyard !!! of course im not angry or
wat la..because i understand that they never seen
this lanyard before !!!! Feng Yuan and me go take
some table top and place it on the ground so as to
make the old folks on the wheelchair pushed
smoothly to their respective sit until at around 5
something, the bus has arrived...escorted them to
their sit, and finally we can take a long
rest....we sit at a corner there waiting for both
MIP to arrive, later a guy from the logistic
department ask us for our help to carry the food
supplies to the side of the road, Me carried the
10kg rice (that was really dam heavy at that
time), the others also the same, some even carry
the 2 cooking oil at once, at around 6 plus, Mr
Charles Chong arrived, the lion dance started to
dance as a respect to the MIP, after around 10 or
15 minutes, RADM Mr Teo Chee Hean arrived in his
own car...the 15 to 20 the lion dance starting to
get restless because the other MIP is still not
here yet , after he arrives the lion dance play
their beats as a warm welcome for him... After
they get sitted...We walk around, listen to our
school's friend singing song, playing the music
like Band & Chinese Orchestra....Well after that
we just slack around until at around 7pm, Me & Raj
go to take a big red plastic bag contain of our
food for my platoon..after that at around 7.45pm
it's time to escort the old folks to their
respective bus...the coordinator give us
information about the packaging of box containing
supplies of food for the old folks, we NCC,NPCC,
Girl Guides,Student Councils, help to carry the
package so something said to me ask them to form a
human chain formation so i shouted :''Alright !!
form the human chain formation.."
after forming they started to pass down the box to
the grass beside the buses which are parking just
beside the road...Me and Raj shouted :" Everybody
endure...""IA IA, double feeling"(this means that
your section has too much box haven't passed down
to the people, "stop and Halt" one funniest thing
is that when the stage started to play techno
songs, the passing of the boxes become faster and
faster, it's like throwing the boxes to one
another...after a long hour, our hands are tired
but we need to have 400 box over here, 900 box
over the other side...later as we are getting
restless, Me,Feng Yuan, Raj and Evan pull down our
long sleeve (hyper mode transformation) i said.We
carried the boxes, it was really very heavy but we
manage to carry it to the location,the 4 of us
were really in high enthu mode at that time...we
pass the boxes here and there...there was the best
moment i ever had...after the whole event we went
back to school to fill up the CIP form, when uncle
choo shouted at us to tell us to go home...so we
just go straight home..But then the CO & some of the band in the canteen pass us the leftover food, there was around 18 packet inside, when we are going home of course we can't leave it in school ma...so Evan bring the whole packet outside...Then when i went out i saw Evan sitting down there with Gabriel Ong with the red plsatic bag contained the food, so i go and asked Evan :"Wa lao, how to finish it ???" there's a girl from CO, she's also assisting us, so we wait until Mr Leong drove his car out, We asked Mr Leong to take a few packet home, he really did take a few...After he went off, we went to shop beside our school, there's a uncle sitting on the chair, we asked him to take some but he dont want, when we saw 2 indian guy walk pass, we asked them, they also dont want.So, we went to the coffeeshop, we approach the cleaner, she was kind enough, she took 4 packet, and then the coffeeshop assistant also come and crowd around, we also gave him 3 pack...After that, Me, Evan and Gabriel go away, the girl who stick with us ninja dont know where already ??? We hack care...just continue to think where to give this food ??? My mind thought of an idea...so i tell them "follow me back to the old folk dining place where the logistic is !!! After we reach there, we just left the food as where we take from and just walk away...Then we go home....
