Singapore to host F1 race next year

SINGAPORE : Singapore will hold a Formula One race in 2008.

This was announced at a press conference on Friday afternoon.

Formula One head Bernie Ecclestone had earlier met property tycoon Ong Beng Seng to discuss the possibility of holding the race in the Republic.

Singapore is keen to host an F1 race and the government has given its blessing to the negotiations between Mr Ong and Mr Ecclestone.

However financial and logistical hurdles have recently slowed progress on a deal.

The government said it was "willing to support such a venture up to a level commensurate with the broader benefits to the economy".

The cost of hosting a race is estimated to be US$70 million.

Aside from the costs, the task of working out logistics, particularly maximising public safety and minimising disruptions to local businesses in the area earmarked for the race, was also proving to be a challenge.

A senior member of Mr Ong's team has previously said a decision needed to be made by April this year if they were to be ready for a 2008 race

A corporate step closer to F1 in S'pore

 

Property tycoon Ong Beng Seng's dream to see Ferrari and McLaren cars roaring past the Padang is close to becoming a reality.

Last Thursday, a company called Singapore GP Pte Ltd was registered with the Accounting & Corporate Regulatory Authority (Acra). The new company's registered address is the HPL House at Cuscaden Road.

With Mr Ong being the managing director of HPL — and the key player in efforts to bring a Formula 1 Grand Prix race to Singapore — the company's registration is seen as a signal that the much-waited announcement on the high-profile event is imminent.

According to Acra, Mr Ong is one of three directors of Singapore GP, which describes its business as "event promotion". The company is reported to have an issued capital of 20 million shares at $1 each.

The other two directors are Mr Teo Hock Seng and Mr Colin Syn.

Mr Teo, who is the managing director of Komoco Motors, is also chairman of S-League powerhouse Tampines Rovers. Mr Syn is president of Hard Rock Café.

The sports fraternity has welcomed the creation of Mr Ong's new company.

Mr Teo Ser Luck, Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, is encouraged that businessmen are now finding sport a worthy investment.

He said: "There are many successful businessmen locally and, hopefully, this will encourage more people like Ong to step forward to help elevate Singapore sport in a big way."

Singapore Sports Council's chief executive officer Ooi Jin Teik added: "Mr Ong is a shrewd and visionary businessman. He obviously understands the sports business model and its return on investment potential."

Mr Ong has been in negotiations with Formula One Management since January to bring a Formula 1 race to Singapore. With this latest development, some sources have suggested that an announcement could come as early as this Sunday, at the Spanish GP at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.

The Singapore race is scheduled to be a Monaco-styled street circuit, possibly the first to ever be held at night. A 4.8-km route, which will showcase the Marina and Esplanade area, has already been designed by renowned German architect Hermann Tilke.

10/5/07 Thursday Last day of exam a.k.a Mini celebration...

Today, Me, Arfian, Zailan, Faris, Wen Kai, Paul mmet each other at Hougang Plaza there to play Lan games... So i'm the first to reach, follow by Wen Kai and Paul, Then Arfian and Zailan, then Faris...

We go there too early la.. around 2 +, and because most of them are under 16 so they can't come in, must wait until 6.30pm then can play... So we have to wait for a long 4 hours....

So we got nothing to do, we just walk around the Plaza 3 lvl, after that, Arfian thought of playing this soft toy machine, so he drop $1 coin and start playing, we help him by giving him the direction... Then he didnt catch any of them... After that is my turn, again it drops, the Arfian again he said his last time playing this machine so he drop $1 coin in and we give him the direction... The hook grab it but before it reaches the drop point it drops...

We murble very loud... Then next is Zailan, we gave him the direction , he said because mine drop to a very safe area, so he control the hook while we gave him the direction, and he got it... Slowly the hook drop the soft toy into the hole and there... After that, we saw Faris sitting outside, we want to cheer him up, so we asked him to come in and play once for Hetty... Hm... But then he don't want, then sian.... So we walk to the coffeeshop downstair and watch the hockey match on the tv... Eat something overthere....

Then we go up again... still cannot go in...Then coincidencely, we saw Royston going into the Billard shop there with his frined... So we go in and watch them play...Then Zailan call his friend to come down, so he brought us in... (He looks like he tooks drugs like that) We divided ourselves into groups, Faris, Me, Arfian and Paul one team, Wen Kai, Zailan and his two friends team, then we wait for his another friend to come before we start playing the game... After that another one of Zailan's friend come, a indian guy, so we start the game by playing C&C General Zero Hour...

After a few minutes of building of structure, they started to attack us, we will shock, then we lost, we play another ime we lost again, after we change game and play Counter Strike, Zailan's two other friend were Hardcore Gamer, everytime frag us within starting of the game, hai ya, we continue to play until, Zailan and his two friend left. Then Paul thought they going to leave us paying their money, so Paul go pursue them, in the end we get mistaken, because they are making a move first... So we comtinue to play, then we change the game and play Dota, first round we play 5 player VS 5 Insane computer AI, we play until our towers are falling, so we quit the game, and use cheat in the next round,typing -WTF means got infinity mana power, can keep using the skills none stop...

So i select the Centaur Warchief, then we start the game, play and play, we lvl up... I lvl up until lvl 6 and use my ulti skill which is summoning a giant golem to fight, so i keep summoning the golem,First i target Roshan the Giant with high HP, after killing it, get his rare item and chiong to upgrade my rank, from Killing spree to Godlike or Holyshit Owning... After finishing the game we pay the bills $8.80 and go home by walking to the bus stop in front of 7-Eleven, so i go home first by taking 147 cause i stay in Hougang follow by the rest taking 136...

Activities we do yesterday...2/5/07 FRIDAY...

Yesterday was a disgusting day for some of us because we saw awful things... After our maths paper 2, we went to one of the block beside the coffeeshop near our school... We are chit-chatting, there's Muz, Me, Zailan, Hairil, Paul and Abid... When suddenly Paul sneezed and a patch of blood just purge out from his nose... (Imagine how awful it is), when we saw it, we all like gonna puke... Then he kept purging his blood from his nose and drip and drip of blood stain were on the floor, then we saw the most awful thing ''Blood clot" EW !!! ... This time Arfian walk away and avoid looking at it, I will say the blood clot looks like a fresh pig liver... His blood kept dripping... Then i pour some water on it... But the blood stain has dried up... (Later somebody from the block thought a murder case has happen)... After his blood stop dripping, we left and went to Arfian's house, we play guitar, sayang his adorable hamster and of course sing sog while they playing guitar... Then later play his com... After around 2pm, for our lunch, we went to Compass point KFC... Overthere, miracle happens... I saw Mr Luo overthere, he was leaving so i called Paul to chase him back and asked him to join us... So he joined us and chit chat for a while he went off... After eating, we shop around, went to royal sporting house to buy Paul's training equipment, bought a 5 kg dont know wat pack for his leg... After that we went into the Metro, guess what ??? We play Play station 2 game... Want to know wat game we play... It's one oof my favourite hero character... Ultraman... It's the first series as i look at it... We take turns and play... I didn't play... I only watch them play... At first they tried to defeat the monster but failed... So they do according to what Zailan said ' Look at the screen sawing the button '' At last the Ultraman chest crest started to flash red, meaning that it's energy gonna ran out... In the end we won... Then we get out of the Metro, and went home...
