Thursday the 4th of January, 2007 saw the 1st pieces of the Floating Platform arrive at its new home of Marina Bay, alongside the Esplanade shoreline. Visitors to the bay may have caught the peculiar sight of two large concrete slabs being towed into the bay by several tugboats and tow-craft. Beginning its journey from its berth in Tuas, the concrete convoy took more than six hours to reach its destination traveling at a precariously slow speed.
Officially witnessing the event were more than a dozen military personnel from the Army and Navy, members of staff from the DSTA and various other governmental agencies. Also present at the inaugural event was Chairman of the NDP '07 EXCO, COL Teo Jing Siong.
Speaking to some of the guests present, COL Teo explained that the Floating Platform was the largest performance floating platform in the world and was designed with numerous innovative considerations in place. Features like an internal drainage system, cabling structures and lightning conductors that can safely dissipate the charge from a lightning strike make this an extremely efficient and safe venue for hosting different types of events.
One of the events that will take place on the platform would be the National Day Parade. With the developing of the National Stadium into a sports hub still in its infant stages, the platform will act as the temporary venue for future National Day Parades starting with NDP '07. With a seating gallery that can seat over 30,000 already in construction along the shoreline, NDP '07 would be the first ever National Day Parade to be held within Marina Bay, opening up a whole new avenue of challenges and excitement for Singapore's birthday bash.
The whole process of constructing the entire platform consists of four stages and numerous other pieces that likewise, have to be towed into the bay and assembled piece by piece. Once within the bay, the slabs are floated into precise positions before being locked into place with their corresponding slabs using a system of specially designed joints and connections. Pylons piled into the seabed act as the foundations for the entire structure. Upon completion, the platform will be linked to the shore via 3 link ways. According to COL Teo, the link ways are designed with special integrated joints that can move up and down with the platform as it is affected by the rising and lowering tides of the bay.
The contours of the buildings along Marina Bay form the acronym 'NDP', with the vibrant fireworks of five stars representing our nation’s ideals of democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality.
Graceful waves encircling the city skyline of Singapore define our identity as a people, in this place we are proud to call home.
In terms of colours, orange captures our passion and determination to build a dynamic city of opportunities.
Purple embodies dignity and hope as Singaporeans come together to celebrate our nation’s independence.
Blue signifies our confidence in overcoming challenges and adversities.
And green reflects the grace and harmony of our garden city.
Transforming the new downtown into a bay of celebrations
NDP @ Marina Bay 2007 will transform the new downtown into a bay of celebrations.
More people will be able to watch the National Day Parade (NDP) 2007 from various vantage points along the waterfront around Marina Bay. There is standing space for about 150,000 people - in addition to the 27,000 spectators at the seating gallery - to soak in the celebratory atmosphere and mood.
The theme for this year’s NDP is Celebrate Singapore: City of Possibilities. This theme reflects optimism and pride as Singaporeans from all walks of life come together to celebrate our nation’s independence. Singapore is today a city of possibilities because Singaporeans are hardworking, innovative and enterprising in creating and seizing opportunities.
Singaporeans are multicultural, and we respect diversity. We welcome newcomers to our shores. This helps to make Singapore a microcosm of the world, and reflects what is possible with determination and effort.
NDP @ Marina Bay 2007, to be held on what is possibly the world’s largest floating performance stage, will retain traditional parade favourites to wow spectators. It will also feature fresh aspects with performances that make use of the waters in the bay and the skies above it as extensions of the performance stage, with the familiar Singapore skyline as a giant backdrop.
The key highlights of NDP @ Marina Bay 2007 are:
NDP @ Marina Bay 2007 is organised by the Singapore Combat Engineers and supported by a host of public and private sector organisations. The executive committee is led by the Singapore Armed Forces' Chief Engineer Officer, Colonel (COL) Teo Jing Siong.
"For this year's parade, there were no templates from previous years for us to follow," said COL Teo. "We had to start planning everything from scratch."
"My team and I have been working on NDP @ Marina Bay 2007 for the past two years, and we will bring a refreshing NDP to Singaporeans," he said.
"Holding the NDP and other celebratory activities around the bay will bring an exciting buzz to the area. This helps to make the new downtown at Marina Bay a vibrant place, not just for doing business, but also for entertainment and leisure for all Singaporeans," added COL Teo.

SINGAPORE : PrimaDeli, Singapore's first home-grown bakery franchise, is the latest eating establishment to receive the halal food certification from the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore.
PrimaDeli has 38 retail outlets island wide offering more than 400 varieties of pastries, buns, bread and cakes.
And after 15 years, it has decided to tap into the halal market and increase its customer base.
The certification process took one and a half years to complete and plenty of research was done to modify recipes without affecting taste.
With the halal mark, the company expects annual sales to increase by an average of 20 percent over the next three years.
Higher returns aside, it also hopes to provide business opportunities to the Muslim community under its franchise system.
Pansy Wong, Deputy General Manager, PrimaDeli Division, said: "We have a lot of enquiries on massive franchising overseas, from different countries as well, from Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines. So we do want to open this opportunity to all the Muslim community in Singapore so they will have this opportunity to join us."
My muslim friends... You'll can eat the delicious bread !!!
