Transforming the new downtown into a bay of celebrations
NDP @ Marina Bay 2007 will transform the new downtown into a bay of celebrations.
More people will be able to watch the National Day Parade (NDP) 2007 from various vantage points along the waterfront around Marina Bay. There is standing space for about 150,000 people - in addition to the 27,000 spectators at the seating gallery - to soak in the celebratory atmosphere and mood.
The theme for this year’s NDP is Celebrate Singapore: City of Possibilities. This theme reflects optimism and pride as Singaporeans from all walks of life come together to celebrate our nation’s independence. Singapore is today a city of possibilities because Singaporeans are hardworking, innovative and enterprising in creating and seizing opportunities.
Singaporeans are multicultural, and we respect diversity. We welcome newcomers to our shores. This helps to make Singapore a microcosm of the world, and reflects what is possible with determination and effort.
NDP @ Marina Bay 2007, to be held on what is possibly the world’s largest floating performance stage, will retain traditional parade favourites to wow spectators. It will also feature fresh aspects with performances that make use of the waters in the bay and the skies above it as extensions of the performance stage, with the familiar Singapore skyline as a giant backdrop.
The key highlights of NDP @ Marina Bay 2007 are:
- A one-hour pre-parade concert featuring local singers, dancers, musicians
and theatre actors to entertain spectators who arrive early. - A dynamic defence display at the end of the 50-minute parade and
ceremonial segment to showcase Singapore's Total Defence capability. This will be a fitting tribute to all National Servicemen as we also celebrate 40 Years of National Service this year. - As night falls, a 50-minute light, sound, water and pyrotechnics show will illuminate the city skyline at Marina Bay.
NDP @ Marina Bay 2007 is organised by the Singapore Combat Engineers and supported by a host of public and private sector organisations. The executive committee is led by the Singapore Armed Forces' Chief Engineer Officer, Colonel (COL) Teo Jing Siong.
"For this year's parade, there were no templates from previous years for us to follow," said COL Teo. "We had to start planning everything from scratch."
"My team and I have been working on NDP @ Marina Bay 2007 for the past two years, and we will bring a refreshing NDP to Singaporeans," he said.
"Holding the NDP and other celebratory activities around the bay will bring an exciting buzz to the area. This helps to make the new downtown at Marina Bay a vibrant place, not just for doing business, but also for entertainment and leisure for all Singaporeans," added COL Teo.
